SSA PhD Studentships and Post-doctoral Fellowship schemes

The Society for the Study of Addiction is now taking applications for its PhD Studentship and Post-doctoral Fellowship schemes which aim to support the next generation of addiction science researchers. The SSA will fund up to three PhD Studentships as full-time students, who will receive a stipend of £17,668 (outside London) or £19,668 (inside London), as well as support for the cost of tuition, and up to £3,000 over the course of the PhD for research costs. One individual will be appointed as an academic fellow and funding will cover a basic academic salary and a budget for research costs for a duration of three years. Co-ordination and Development Officer, Employability

The Scottish Drugs Forum are currently recruiting for the position of Co-ordination and Development Officer to support the delivery of the Addiction Worker Training Project. The post will work to ensure that people with lived and living experience of drug and alcohol problems are sufficiently represented in drug and alcohol service delivery through co-ordination of all aspects of a work-based training programme. The Binks Hub PhD Studentship

The Binks Hub at the University of Edinburgh is offering a funded interdisciplinary PhD opportunity for 2023-2024 entry. They are looking for applicants who will view their project in the context of the overall vision of the centre, which is keen to contribute to tackling social inequalities and whose work can build stronger relationships between the University and its range of research partners and collaborators. Sexual Health and Blood Borne Viruses Strategy: Funding programme 2023-2026

In Spring 2023, the Scottish Government will publish a new Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus (SHBBV) Strategy for 2023-2026. To coincide with this publication, the Scottish Government is also revising its programme of SHBBV funding to support the priorities of the new Strategy. The Government are accepting applications for this funding which is open to bids from Health Boards, academia and third sector organisations. Please email admin@drns.ac.uk to receive a guidance document which provides detail on the key themes of the new Strategy, highlighting the priority areas for this funding round, as well as more general advice on the application process. Deadline for applications is 27th March 2023 and should be submitted to healthprotection@gov.scot


PhD Opportunity in Addiction Medicine

The University of St Andrews are currently seeking applications for a PhD project aiming to explore mechanistic insights into the pathophysiology of opioid dependence by examining vascular function and oxidative stress. There is a requirement as part of this PhD, to not only conduct an opportunistic, treatment seeking, case-controlled cohort study, but also to utilise linked datasets. Reducing Drug Deaths Innovation Challenge

This Challenge is now open for applications for a share of £5,00,000 which explore innovative solutions that focus on detection of, response to, and intervention in potentially fatal drug overdose episodes. The challenge aims to deliver on shared aims from Addiction Mission, the Scottish Government’s National Mission and UK’s Drug Strategy, of preventing drug related deaths and harms, through supporting new innovative interventions. Two Small Business Research Initiative competitions are open to applicants based on their stage of product development:

  • A feasibility studies competition for products that require support at the prototype development stage where applicants can receive an initial £100,000 for a 4-month project.
  • A demonstration competition for applicants who have technology already at an advanced stage of development, near ready to be deployed in a real-world environment, where applicants can bid immediately for up to £500,000 for a 12-month project.
