Supervised Drug Consumption Facilities Bill: second reading

Alison Thewliss MP (Glasgow Central, SNP) is pursuing a Bill in Westminster to make legal provision for Supervised Drug Consumption Facilities across the UK. The Bill:

  • sets out principles for the Secretary of State to licence facilities based on applications that demonstrate fitness for purpose of staff, premises and protocols.
  • proposes various amendments to the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 to protect facility clients and staff from prosecution.
  • requires the Secretary of State to consult with the devolved administrations and Governments to provide annual reports of facilities’ impact on drug-related deaths, public injecting and infections acquired through drug litter.

The Bill receives its second reading on Fri 22nd March when MPs will have their first opportunity to debate the main principles.
